The Russian Government claimed that every citizen
has the freedom to live however they want. But, they
made it against the law to convince another person to
keep Jewish laws. Also, parents were forbidden to
teach their children about being Jewish.
The government had people spy on their neighbors,
friends, and family. They gave harsh punishments for
teaching Torah. The Russian Government sent people
away to prison camps for many years. People were
very afraid.
